About the Journal
History and Previous Issues
Pirandello Studies began its publications in 1981 as The Yearbook of the British Pirandello Society (vols. 1-10), then as The Yearbook of the Society for Pirandello Studies (vols. 11 to 16), then simply as Pirandello Studies (vols. 17-45). The tables of contents of previous print issues can be found here. Since Vol 37, Pirandello Studies has been also distributed in electronic format by EBSCO Publishing as part of the MLA International Bibliography with Full Text.
From Vol. 46 (2026), while retaining its original interest in all aspects of Pirandello's life and works, Pirandello Studies broadened its scope to any topic in Modern Italian Drama and committed to a hybrid publication format, making its yearly issue available Open Access online, as well as continuing to offer print issues for purchase or subscription.
Aims & Scope
We publish research on the life and works of Luigi Pirandello and on Italian Drama from the 20th century to the present, aimed at other scholars, teaching professionals, students in higher education, and creative practitioners. Within this scope, we are happy to consider proposals for contributions in the following formats:
- Scholarly articles
- Book reviews
- Performance reviews
- Interviews
- Reports
- Translations
- Creative writing
The preferred length of an article is up to 6,000 words, and of a review up to 2,000 words; longer scripts will nonetheless be considered. We do not normally accept publications that have already appeared elsewhere; however, if you think that the circumstances justify a republication of significant content, please let us know.
We accept contributions in English and Italian, and can offer editorial assistance for non-native speakers who would like to publish in English.
If you are thinking of submitting your work, feel free to contact the editors with any questions.
Open Access Policy
From vol 46 (2026) our online issues are available Open Access at no cost for authors and readers (Libre Open Access or Diamond Open Access). We do not levy Article Processing Charges. Our running costs are covered by members of The Society for Pirandello Studies, who receive a complimentary print copy. Membership of the Society is not compulsory to publish with us; however, if you like our work and would like to support it, please consider becoming a member.
