Recruitment
Mapping the Impossible is recruiting! Please note that all work with the journal is volunteer-based and occurs remotely.
Editorial and Social Media Staff:
We are looking for new editors and social media experts to join our team! To work with us, you must be a current student in higher education.
Editors:
As an editor, you will walk authors through each step of the publishing process. When articles are submitted, we will decide as an editorial board whether the article should be rejected, revised and resubmitted, or accepted. Editors will choose articles they align with to work with the author and oversee the process from submission to publication; this editor will be responsible for leading the author through a double-blind peer review process and helping to shape the final article for publication.
As an editor, the weekly time commitment varies around the year. Some weeks, there won’t be anything to do, as we might be waiting to receive submissions or you may be waiting for an author/peer review to return material to you. Other weeks may include various combinations of the following tasks: reading submissions, attending board meetings, responding to emails, and completing feedback for authors.
Social Media:
Our social media coordinators will be responsible for promoting the journal’s publications on our social media platforms and putting out calls for submissions, as well as generally engaging with any interaction that we have on our social media platforms.
We are currently looking to fill both editorial and social media positions. While these are voluntary positions, they are incredibly valuable as they will help you gain experience with academic publishing and editing.
How to Apply
For application instructions, see the applicable sections below.
Editorial positions: If you are interested in being an associate editor with Mapping the Impossible, please your resume/CV and a completed editing sample.
- Download this article sample (a little over 8 pages) and complete a preliminary edit of it. In addition to focusing on line edits/mechanical edits, please also pay attention to:
- Whether the argument is successful and what help you might be able to offer in this regard
- Whether the literature review is sufficient/whether the text engages with other scholarly work
- Whether the analysis is persuasive or not
In each of these cases, suggest ideas or ask questions that might help the writer. In other words, instead of just pointing out what’s wrong, also provide some guidance on how the writer might actually revise the piece. We are looking for 2-4 paragraphs of feedback.
- Download a copy and type out your editor feedback in this form.
Submit both your edits and your resume in a combined PDF file to journal.for.fantasy@gmail.com with the subject title “Editor Application: [Name].” We will contact you after we have looked at your materials. Please allow 2-3 weeks to hear back from us.
Social media coordinators: If you are interested in working with us in a social media capacity, please submit a 200-400 word cover letter explaining the following:
- Your familiarity with various social media platforms
- Your ideal weekly time commitment
- Why you want to work with the journal
- What you hope to gain from working with the journal
Submit your cover letter as a PDF to journal.for.fantasy@gmail.com with the subject title: “Social Media Application: [Name].” Please allow 2-3 weeks to hear back from us.
Peer Reviewers:
Mapping the Impossible is always looking for new reviewers to help review our papers. Peer reviewing is a brilliant opportunity to gain experience with academic publishing, build your CV, and engage with the latest literature in the field. Given the interdisciplinary nature of our journal, we welcome researchers with expertise anywhere under the arts and humanities umbrella.
To sign up as a reviewer, please first consult our Peer Review Process page. If you have any questions, send us an email at journal.for.fantasy@gmail.com. When you’re ready to submit yourself to our reviewer database, send an email to journal.for.fantasy@gmail.com with the subject title: “Reviewer – [your name].”
In the body of the email, please list: name, email address, the university you are affiliated with, and your research areas of specialty. You will receive an email confirmation when you have been added to our peer review database!
