Looking back on a year of Surgo

Now that we are nearing the end of the
very long academic year, it seems like an
opportune moment to reflect on a year of
Surgo. Ultimately, I am extremely proud of
what our Surgo team has achieved over the
past 10 months. However, this would not
have been possible without the guidance
and contributions of staff and students
alike.
When we began our work in September,
Surgo had largely lost it’s drive and
identity; I could only recall 2 issues of
Surgo being released since I started
medical school in 2019! This formed our
goal for the academic year: to put Surgo
back on the map and have staff and
students WANT to contribute to our
magazine. I think that we have definitely
achieved this. Since September, we have
released 4 issues of Surgo and we have
discussed a wide range of topics: climate
change in healthcare, disability in
medicine, the cost of living crisis and many
more!
My biggest thank you has to go to Prof.
Cindy Chew. Cindy has been the driving
force behind Surgo’s creative commons
license which has allowed Surgo to be a
place for students to showcase their work
and benefit from doing so. Not to mention
Cindy’s interesting tail lights column at the
end of each issue. THANK YOU!
Thank you to Dr. Camille Huser for
educating me about the impact of
healthcare on climate change and for
helping me to share this message to the
student population. And thank you to my
Surgo team: Lucy, Eva, Daanyaal, Chloe and
Dominique, for working behind the scenes
and for your contributions.
Feeling like I have helped to return Surgo to
its former glory, it was the right time to
hand over the editor in chief title to our
arts director, Daanyaal Ashraf. I feel very
confident that Daanyaal will keep the Surgo
momentum going next year and that he will
do a fantastic job.
Bye! Anna x
